Experienced Mental Health Social Worker and Family Mediator
Sheryl-Lee is an experienced Mental Health Social Worker and Family Mediator who is driven by a warm and sincere approach. She is a passionate individual, couple and family therapist. She offers EMDR (eye movement desensitisation reprocessing) as she understands the impact trauma can have on an individual’s quality of life.
EMDR is a structured psychotherapy approach designed to help people process and reduce distress linked to traumatic or overwhelming experiences. It helps the brain “unstick” memories that are stored in a highly emotional or fragmented way, so they can be processed more like normal memories.
During EMDR, the therapist guides the client to briefly focus on aspects of a distressing memory while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation (most commonly side-to-side eye movements). This dual attention is thought to support the brain’s natural processing system.
Over time, the memory usually becomes less emotionally intense and less intrusive. Clients often report:
● Reduced distress when recalling the event
● Fewer flashbacks or triggers
● More balanced, adaptive beliefs about themselves (e.g., shifting from “I’m not safe” to “It’s over now and I survived”)
EMDR is commonly used for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and distressing life experiences, and does not require clients to go into extensive detail about the event if they don’t want to.
A typical course involves preparation (building safety and coping skills), targeted memory processing, and then consolidation, where new insights and emotional relief are integrated. Sheryl-Lee brings light-heartedness and humour to her therapeutic practice when appropriate. Sheryl-Lee writes Family Reports for the Family Court as she has a passion for advocating for children. With extensive experience in trauma recovery and emotional well being, Sheryl-Lee offers evidence-based practice to help clients achieve their goals effi ciently and effectively. She integrates different therapeutic modalities, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed parts work, mindfulness-based interventions and Clinical Hypnotherapy. She enjoys working with children, young adults and adults presenting with family and relationship issues, couple counselling, depression, anxiety, trauma, difficulties with parenting and other stressors that might impact the individual in daily life.
