Driver’s Licence Checks

Supporting Safe and Independent Driving

A driver's licence medical assessment helps determine whether you meet the medical standards required to drive safely. At Terrey Hills Family Surgery, our experienced GPs conduct medical assessments in accordance with Transport for NSW requirements and the national Austroads Assessing Fitness to Drive guidelines.

Driving is an important part of maintaining independence, employment and everyday life. Our role is to assess your medical fitness to drive, provide advice about any health conditions that may affect your driving, and complete the required medical documentation for Transport for NSW.

Older Drivers

In NSW, drivers aged 75 and over require an annual medical assessment to keep an unrestricted licence — Transport for NSW will post you an assessment letter about 8 weeks before your birthday. From age 85, a practical driving assessment is also required in addition to the yearly medical. Our GPs can complete your annual assessment and discuss any health factors that may affect your driving.

We provide assessments for

  • Older drivers requiring licence renewal
  • Commercial, bus, truck and heavy vehicle drivers
  • Taxi and rideshare drivers
  • Drivers with chronic or complex medical conditions
  • Medical reviews following illness, injury or surgery
  • Vision or hearing impairment
  • Diabetes, cardiovascular, respiratory or neurological conditions
  • Other medical conditions that may affect fitness to drive

What to expect

Your GP will review your medical history, current health, medications, and any factors that may affect your ability to drive safely. Where appropriate, further investigations or specialist reports may be required before your assessment can be completed.

Following your assessment, the required medical report will be completed or submitted for Transport for NSW. The final decision regarding your licence, including any conditions or review periods, is made by Transport for NSW - not by your GP.

Your Appointment

Please bring your Transport for NSW letter or medical assessment form, glasses or hearing aids if you use them, a list of your current medications, and any recent specialist letters. If you have diabetes, please bring your blood glucose records. Licence medical assessments are generally not covered by Medicare - our reception team can advise of the fee when booking.

Book an appointment with one of our GPs if you require a driver's licence medical assessment or have received a request from Transport for NSW - call us on (02) 9450 1083 or book online.
